Cleveland ATC indicted on sexual abuse claims

A Cleveland high school athletic trainer has been indicted and accused of sexually abusing underage student-athletes.

Ryan Goughnour, 34, worked as a contracted athletic trainer at the University School Hunting Valley campus in Cleveland, OH, before being fired in December 2024.

clevelandA recent story from MSN.com detailed the indictment. Below is an excerpt from the MSN.com story.

A Cuyahoga County grand jury handed up an indictment this week charging Goughnour with gross sexual imposition, kidnapping, attempted pandering of sexually oriented matter involving a minor, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, and possessing criminal tools.

Goughnour is scheduled for a Feb. 13 arraignment.

Authorities said Goughnour had illegal physical contact and communication with three boys from Aug. 2022 through December. Officials have not said if the accusations involved students at the school.

The school ended its contract with Goughnour’s employer, University Hospitals, on Dec. 14 and reported the accusations to Hunting Valley police and the Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services.

School officials said Goughnour underwent a background check before he was hired and had no prior criminal history.

University Schools Head of School Patrick T. Gallagher said in a statement he was grateful for those who stepped forward to report the accusations.

“The scope of these charges is upsetting and saddening for our entire school community, and they go beyond the reports which we received and alerted authorities to last month,” Gallagher said. “The safety of our community members is our highest priority and we remain focused on the most important work of supporting our students and reviewing and refining our school’s policies and procedures that safeguard student well-being.”
