Texas Strength Coach Torre Becton Focusing on Details

A culture shift is occurring within the University of Texas football program, and it begins in the weight room.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian’s vision for that culture shift centers on attention to detail: whether that’s focusing on a walk-through or reaching a PR with your deadlift.

texasAn assistant that’s carrying the message for Sarkisian is the newly hired strength and conditioning coach, Torre Becton. In a recent article on LonghornsWire.com, Becton is shown stressing the importance of attention to detail across the program.

Last season and even years prior, the amount of ‘stingers’ Texas players suffered began to pile up, LonghornsWire opined. And when it came to on the field, LongHornsWire noted what felt like an infinite amount of time where players looked outmatched strength-wise.

The UT football Twitter account recently shared how the team is focusing on attention to detail in the weight room, led by Becton, with a new hype video.

Becton comes to Texas after completing four seasons as a head athletic performance coach for football at California. Outside of the 2020 season when the Bears played just four games, Becton has been on the staff of bowl teams in eight of the previous nine seasons after the Golden Bears’ trips to the Cheez-It Bowl in 2018 and Redbox Bowl in 2019.

Prior to Becton’s arrival at Cal in 2017, he spent a combined six seasons on the strength and conditioning staffs at Washington (2011-15) and USC (2016), working with Cal head coach Justin Wilcox during the 2012 and 2013 seasons at Washington when Wilcox served as defensive coordinator for the Huskies.

As the associate head strength and conditioning coach at USC in 2016, he helped the Trojans develop into one of the top teams in the nation with a final No. 3 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.

Becton spent the five prior seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Washington, the first three under Sarkisian and another two after being retained by Chris Petersen.
