Assessing Safe Return-to-Play Using Biodex Technology
Accurate baseline screening and post-injury assessment is essential to protecting athletes from reinjury and keeping them in the game. Biodex technology helps manage specific injuries to determine safe return-to-play. The Biodex Balance System SD and portable BioSway measure postural sway for concussion management. The System 4 features protocols to determine RTS (Return to Sports) after an ACL repair or hamstring injury.
For Concussion Management: Balance System SD & BioSway
Research shows that athletes often demonstrate decreased stability post-concussion. The postural stability deficit can best be explained by a sensory interaction problem that prevents concussed athletes from accurately using and exchanging sensory information from the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems.
Or, more simply stated, the athlete may appear asymptomatic and even pass a computerized cognitive test, however, the lingering effects of a balance disturbance from head trauma would otherwise go undetected without a balance assessment.
The Biodex Balance System SD is a sophisticated measuring and training device for static and dynamic balance testing and training. Using the versatile Balance System SD, athletic trainers an objective neurophysical component to quantify the elements of balance before and after injury occurs. Patients are challenged to shift and control their center of gravity through an interactive balance game and other rehabilitative strategies. All test results can be stored and printed to assess athletes after concussion and determine safe return-to-play.
The Biodex BioSway is a portable, easy-to-transport system perfect for coaches and trainers on the go. The lightweight instrumented platform and high-resolution touch-screen display set up in minutes to provide athletes with a choice of interactive teaching modes or standardized testing environments including the Clinical Test of Sensory Integration of Balance (CTSIB). As with the Balance System SD, all test results can be stored and printed to establish need, progress and outcome.
Both the Balance System SD and the BioSway can be used to help athletes perform better by documenting weaknesses and challenging them to improve, making it an essential tool for coaches and trainers to keep athletes at top performance levels. Customers using Biodex Balance Assessment in support of a concussion management program have access to an assortment of customizable marketing materials to attract athletes, parents, community sports teams, school coaches, and athletic directors.
For ACL or Hamstring Injury – Biodex System 4
Studies have shown that healing time and certain factors, including more symmetrical quadriceps strength prior to return to sport, reduces the reinjury rate. Whether you are treating professional athletes or weekend warriors, the new Biodex System 4 Dynamometer provides objective isokinetic testing of quadriceps strength that puts confidence behind the RTS (return to sports) decision.
New software offered with the Biodex System 4 (also suitable for System 2 and 3) features objective test protocols that provide valuable, isolated muscle-performance data for hamstring risk management and RTS after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. Test results, combined with established targeted outcomes, can be used for preemptive injury screening, managing rehabilitation and determining readiness for return to play.
Other new features include:
* Enhanced Data Export Utility – allows users to download all patient test information at one time, including both calculated and raw data.
* Exported Data Parser – makes it simple to convert .csv files into a report format.
* Expanded and updated isokinetic normative data – is available for multiple joints, including data from pediatric through adults, ages 5-83.
