Jan 29, 2015Concussion Discussion
One of Monday afternoon’s feature presentations will include longtime T&C editorial board member, author, and all-around high school athletic training guru Jon Almquist, LAT, ATC, who will speak about “The Role of the Athletic Trainer in the Multi-Disciplinary Treatment of Sports Related Concussion.” Almquist’s talk is part of a larger feature presentation about “Concussion and the Athletic Trainer: Innovative Evaluation Modalities.” From Almquist himself, here’s what you can expect to hear about at the feature presentation.
This presentation will involve a detailed discussion on the expanding role of the athletic trainer in concussion diagnosis and management. Specifically, concussion management guidelines will be discussed with reference to both on-field management and post-injury follow-up. The presentation will also involve a detailed review of new and innovative concussion evaluation modalities, including neurocognitive assessment of vestibular and balance function and new neuro-imaging techniques. Finally, the presentation will review cutting edge treatment options for post-concussion syndrome.
After attending this feature presentation, attendees will:
• Be able to properly diagnose a concussion
• Have an increased understanding of the important role of the athletic trainer in the multi-disciplinary treatment of sports related concussion
• Get exposure to new and innovative concussion evaluation modalities.
Joining me at the presentation will be Micky Collins, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Janna Fonseca, MEd, LAT, ATC, of Carolina Family Practice & Sports Medicine.
