Tennessee’s Wirth Wins NSCA Strength Coach of the Year Award

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) has announced that Tennessee Director of Olympic Sports Performance Dan Wirth is the organization’s 2023 College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.

“I am humbled and grateful to be named the 2023 College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year,” Wirth said. “I’m so proud to represent the University of Tennessee, to work with the incredible staff and student-athletes here and to be a part of the success of this great program. Also, a huge thanks to the NSCA for this award and for the educational and professional support for the past three decades.”

tennesseeThe NSCA Coaching Task Force will present Wirth with his award at the 2023 NSCA Coaches Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Jan. 5.

Wirth, who joined the Tennessee Athletics staff in November of 2017, is responsible for the supervision and development of all strength, speed, and conditioning programs for baseball, basketball, cheer/dance, golf, rowing, tennis, track & field, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and volleyball.

Over the last year, Tennessee has captured SEC team championships in baseball, soccer, and women’s swimming & diving. Numerous student-athletes with the swimming & diving and track & field programs also captured SEC individual or relay titles during that span.

Tennessee in 2021-22 captured the SEC All-Sports Trophy, topping the men’s SEC all-sports standings and finishing second in the women’s standings.

“Dan is a tremendous asset to our Olympic sport teams and their student-athletes,” Tennessee Senior Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine & Sports Performance Jason McVeigh said. “He provides valuable leadership to our staff and has extensive expertise in the field of strength and conditioning. His energy and passion for his role is unmatched, and he is extremely deserving of such a special recognition by his peers.”

Wirth came to Rocky Top in November of 2017. He is instrumental in working with the Sports Performance staff to develop and coordinate Tennessee Athletics’ performance science initiatives and serves on the Athletics Sports Performance Team and Sport Science Committee.
