Mar 3, 2025Detroit Mercy offers two new sports medicine programs
University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) recently added two new bachelor’s degree programs to its College of Health Professions (CHP), giving students who want a career in health care even more options.
Beginning in the fall of 2025, students will be able to earn a degree in Health Sciences and Sports and Exercise Sciences. With these options, students will be able to customize their degree to fit their career plans.
The health care field is one that’s projected to grow faster than average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this field specifically, the Bureau expects 1.9 million openings to be available each year between now and 2033.
“The field of health care is growing rapidly and in need of well-trained, empathetic health care practitioners of the kind Detroit Mercy produces with our Jesuit and Mercy education,” said CHP Dean Ahmed Radwan.
The sports and exercise sciences degree program will combine practical hands-on learning experiences, as well as Detroit Mercy’s exceptional classroom education, values and personal attention for which its College of Health Professions is known.
Graduates from the program can expect to work as health or strength and conditioning coaches, health care administrators, fitness directors and more. Additionally, the degrees will be helpful for students who plan to do graduate study in disciplines like athletic training or physical therapy. It will also prove to be beneficial for those who want to work in a non-health care career like social work, law or businesses where sports and exercise science knowledge will be advantageous.
“These two new degree programs can lead to excellent careers related to health care, athletics, community health and wellness,” Radwan said.
