Athletic trainers are not often recognized for all they do for their schools. So an “athletic trainer appreciation ceremony” following a Friday night football game between California’s Servite and Orange Lutheran high schools seemed a great opportunity to thank the behind-the-scenes sports medicine professionals from both schools for their efforts.
But appearances can be deceiving.
According to an article on Max Preps, Servite Head Athletic Trainer Chaz Kekipi staged the ceremony as a way to propose to his girlfriend, Karen Zieger, an Assistant Athletic Trainer for Orange Lutheran. Kekipi had players sign a ball that was handed to Zieger during the ceremony. The ball also contained a message from Kekipi saying, “Will you marry me?”
With Kekipi waiting on a bended knee, Zieger accepted the proposal. Players from both teams erupted in cheers, ending an evening that few in attendance will forget.
