A New Way to Cool Off

Poteet (Texas) High School is using a new fan system to keep its athletes cool during summer football practice. According to News 4 San Antonio, two local companies donated two cooling stations for the team to use during their daily practices. The fans had been designed for people working on oil fields or in construction. Players can sit in a trailer with a fan blowing cool air, a system that requires a tank to be filled with water every few days.

“Just hook it up to electricity and then we turn a switch on the pump for the fan,” Poteet Athletic Trainer Francisco Serrata said.

The units, which cost $2,500, are available to Poteet High School for the next two weeks.

“I sat in it every single time we had a break,” Alfonso Pena, a senior, said.

Doug Foster, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, said the units can accommodate most of the team. He said that he hopes that the units will help keep athletes cool and safe from heat exhaustion and “give parents and those athletes peace of mind.”
