Tom Fregoso Reflects

March 4th marked 25 years since the death of Loyola Marymount basketball star Hank Gathers. The tragedy reverberated throughout the college sports world, but few people were impacted more than Tom Fregoso, who is now Athletic Trainer for the Oregon State University men’s basketball team. Then, however, he was an Athletic Trainer for the University of Portland, LMU’s opponent that afternoon, and he performed CPR on Gathers until an ambulance took him away.

This poignant story from the Oregonian explains how Fregoso handled the events and aftermath of that day and links them to another athlete who collapsed in a similar manner last summer—and who was revived by Fregoso.
