The National Athletic Trainers’ Association has released its 2016 award winners, and we are proud to note that many of the names have graced the pages of Training & Conditioning. Among the seven new inductees to the NATA Hall of Fame are Michael Goldenberg, Athletic Trainer at the Lawrenceville School; Patrick Sexton, Professor and Director of Athletic Training Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato; and Gary Wilkerson, Professor and Director of Research, Health and Human Performance, at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
Goldenberger was a source for several articles in the early 2000s including one from 2001 honoring him with our Above the Call award. Sexton’s earliest preserved appearance in T&C came in a 1996 article on the increasing demands on athletic trainers and he penned a 2003 article on the importance of finding the root cause of injuries instead of just treating the symptoms. Wilkerson talked with us for a 2007 article on working with Generation Y athletic trainers.
Larry Cooper, the 2015 winner of our Most Valuable Athletic Trainer award, and Athletic Trainer at Penn Trafford (Pa.) High School, is among those earning Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer laurels. This list also includes Jim Berry, Head Athletic Trainer, Conway (S.C.) High School, who has been a source for several articles, most recently reflecting on one of his mentors, University of Michigan and Detroit Tigers Athletic Trainer Russ Miller. They’re joined by Tamara McLeod, Director of the Athletic Training Program at A.T. Still University, who co-wrote an article in 2014 on concussion assessment tools.
