Partnership Pays Off

For many athletic trainers, trading in an old, tired facility for a brand new, state-of-the-art athletic training room is a dream. For Alicia Roane, MS, LAT, ATC, Head Athletic Trainer at Clayton State University in Georgia, the dream came true this fall.

More than three times bigger than the school’s previous athletic training space, the new facility was officially opened last month with a ribbon cutting, according to a press release from the school. The center includes two offices for sports medicine staff, a hydrotherapy area, multiple treatment tables, and two taping stations.

The new athletic training room took six months to construct and was made possible partly because of Clayton State’s partnership with OrthoAtlanta Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists, an Atlanta-based group of 39 surgeons, physical therapists, and other specialists that provides care to the school’s student-athletes. In appreciation of its positive relationship with the school, OrthoAtlanta donated $60,000 toward the project. As a result, the new facility was named the “OrthoAtlanta Athletic Training Room.”

“Clayton State Athletics has always been so welcoming to me, trusting, and deserves this,” said Clayton State team physician Timothy Ghattas, MD, of OrthoAtlanta. “Alicia Roane and her staff have worked in all kinds of crazy conditions during the transition and have done a fantastic job. She does more with less and you deserve this just as much as the University does.”

Roane joked about the size of her previous workspace at the opening of the new facility.

“For those of you that had never been to our athletic training facility before … there was hardly room,” she said. “Along with the space improvement, we were also able to go from hand-me-downs to customized and top notch equipment that will allow us to provide much better services to our student-athletes and stay current in the ever-changing realm of athletic training.”
