With more than half of its $1.7 million financial goal in place, the University of Central Florida is likely going to get started with building a nutrition center by the spring of 2018. This mark was reached with a $1 million contribution from one of the UCF trustees.
“On behalf of our entire athletic department and our student-athletes, we are so grateful for Bob Garvy’s generous gift to support the creation of the Garvy Center for Student-Athlete Nutrition,” Danny White, UCF athletic director told the Orlando Sentinel. “Bob, Carol and their family have been amazing supporters of the Knights for a very long time and we greatly appreciate everything they’ve done for the Black and Gold over the years.”
The Garvy Center for Student-Athlete Nutrition would give all of UCF’s 435 student-athletes access to nutritional resources. The center would also house the university’s first training table, which has been a priority for UCF Football Coach Scott Frost.
“It is so important that these kids get the proper nutrition,” Garvy told the Orlando Sentinel. “The nutrition needs vary tremendously among all the different student-athletes. We really need to extend it now and have the ability to feed them properly.”
The football program has also recently partnered with the school’s college of medicine. Led by Dr. Magdelena Pasarica, the weekly program allowed players to meet with 10 to 12 medical students to talk about their nutritional goals.
