In looking to upgrade its weightroom, Brockton (Mass.) High School turned to some partners for help. According to The Enterprise, a grant from the Save Our Sports foundation funded the work, and a part-time strength and conditioning coach at Harvard University helped design the room.
The changes include new flooring, a new coat of paint on the walls, 15 yards of Astroturf, and new equipment, such as medicine balls.
“It’s a complete night and day from what we used to have,” Kevin Karo, Brockton High’s athletic director, said. “To see the before and after, people say, ‘Are you kidding me? It’s the same space?’ What we were able to to was to renovate the old weight room and turn it into a new state-of-the-art facility for all of our kids up here.”
Karo said the revamped gym will help student-athletes stretch, do agility training, and work on their cores, which are important aspects of training that had not been feasible in the previous facility.
“We did our homework,” Karo said. “It was a good, sound investment. A majority is body weight exercises, speed and agility. It’s just something that needed to be done.”
