Athletes Hospitalized

Irele Oderinde, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of Oregon’s football program, has been suspended without pay for a month after three athletes were hospitalized following strenuous training sessions.

According to The Register-Guard, after three days of working out, one player complained about having sore muscles, and the medical staff identified similar symptoms in two other players. The Oregonian reported that after an hour of push-ups and up-downs, one of the players, Sam Poutasi, was suffering from rhabdomyolysis, muscle breakdown that could lead to kidney failure and death. Doug Brenner, an offensive lineman, was discharged on Tuesday, while Cam McCormick, a tight end, and Poutasi are still in the hospital, in good condition.

“The university holds the health, safety and well-being of all of our students in high regard,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said in a statement. “We are confident that these athletes will soon return to full health, and we will continue to support them and their families in their recoveries.”

Jim Radcliffe, the football program’s strength and conditioning coordinator, will serve as Oderinde’s interim replacement. The school issued an apology.

“I have visited with the three young men involved in the incidents in the past few days and I have been in constant contact with their families, offering my sincere apologies,” Willie Taggart, football coach, said in a statement. “As the head football coach, I hold myself responsible for all of our football-related activities and the safety of our students must come first.”

Mak Djulbegovic, a former Bulls offensive lineman, said that Oderinde’s training regiments were within reason.

“Sounds really, really bad, but at the end of the day (Oderinde’s) not gonna make you do something that’s not reasonable,” he said. “Sure, it’ll be very difficult, but if you don’t take the right steps to be ready for these things, you might wind up in the hospital as these kids found out.
