A Run to Remember

The George Washington University men’s basketball program made offseason training memorable and meaningful, by incorporating the Vietnam Veterans Memorial into workouts. Players run to the black granite wall, where the names of more than 58,000 slain or missing men and women are inscribed.

Head Coach Mike Lonergan told Richmond.com that he wanted the student-athletes to learn something during practices. Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Johnson took the idea a step further and asked players to remember a name every time they ran to the Memorial. Back on campus, the athletes conducted some simple internet research about those who sacrificed their lives and posted short biographies on the walls of the weight room.

“I thought that was awesome,” Lonergan said. “I had a tear come to my eye.”
