Sound vs. Fury

Getting athletes to sleep well after adrenaline-filled workouts can be a difficult task, but recuperation is needed following mental and physical challenges. Matt Lindland, Head Coach of the USA Men’s National Greco-Roman Wrestling team was looking for something to help his team with recovery.

During his search, Lindland reached out to Steven Kotler, an author and thought leader in neuroscience and performance space for recommendations. An article from Sporttechie.com explains that Kotler then pointed Lindland to brain.fm, a platform that tailors music to help with specific neurological states.

The team began using the platform in February for three main mental states: focus, relaxation, and sleep. As a result, the team has used this technology in preparing for competition as well as recovering.

“At first, I was using Brain.fm’s sleep music because I had trouble falling/staying asleep, which is crucial for recovery from intense practices,” team captain Robby Smith told Sporttechie.com. “Then, I gradually started also using the focus and relaxation music to help me prepare and get in the zone for practice and then wind down from practice.”

Although the audio is customized to individual users, the audio patterns are developed for specific mental states. Moving forward, Lindland hopes to work with the platform to develop customized music for the team’s recovery and strength training routines.
