Setting the Standard

January 23, 2017

At the University of Texas, football strength coach Yancy McKnight is starting the offseason by splitting players into three groups depending on factors like their character, work ethic, and accountability. According to an article from the Austin American-Statesman, the players will be ranked as gold, green, or crimson. The players on the gold-level good are doing well in all three areas.

“They’re mature and handle their business and their position coach doesn’t have to chase them all over town, trying to find them for class or get them to a lift or whatever it is,” McKnight told the Austin American-Statesman. “Green guys are transitioning up. They’re moving that way to gold, being the gold standard.”

The players who are ranked as crimson, have some work to do. The color designation was chosen due to it being rival Oklahoma’s color.

“If you can get to where you’re supposed to go and do all your stuff, then you get treated like a big boy,” McKnight told the Austin American-Statesman. “But if you can’t do those other things, like if you can’t set your alarm clock, we’re going to have somebody do it for you. I’m sure it gets monotonous. Once they change their pattern of behavior, we’ll take some restrictions off of them.”
