Schools Lose Athletic Trainers

September 6, 2017

Richmond (Va.) Public Schools are working to find athletic trainers for its five high schools. This came after Bon Secours Health System announced it would end its contract that provided one athletic trainer for each school, as reported by Richmond Times-Dispatch

“The timing of this decision creates a critical situation with our fall sports season already under way, which proves to be a very high volume time for medical liabilities,” Thomas Kranz, interim schools superintendent, said in a statement published by Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Bon Secours is providing two athletic trainers to the schools until the end of November, while the schools’ athletic directors and officials are trying to fill the gaps. Moving forward, the school district is looking into other options. Potential partnerships with Virginia Commonweath University Sports Medicine and HCA Virginia Sports Medicine are currently being explored.

“We look forward to the opportunity to begin a new partnership with a service provider that truly values serving our population of students to ultimately support the continued success of our athletic teams and coaches,” Kranz said.

Bon Secours said the move was business-related. It also provides athletic trainers to several other school districts, along with the University of Richmond and the Richmond Kickers. The contracts with other schools haven’t changed.
