Partnership Produces Drink

June 8, 2018

Looking to produce a new sports recovery drink for its student-athletes, the University of Wisconsin recently partnered with the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research. According to, the drink will incorporate Switchel, an apple cider vinegar-based beverage with health benefits. John Dettmann, director of Performance for UW Athletics, said the planned drink would be a cherry-flavored variant.

"There's some science behind apple cider vinegar being good for muscle cramping," Dettmann said. "There's also some other ingredients in it: tart cherry juice, whey protein, ginger, some other things that we define as healthy for athletes, not only for recovery but just for human health in general."

Hong Jiang, a research specialist for dairy research, said the drink will include dairy ingredients, such as whey protein, as well as Wisconsin tart cherry juice.

"Whey protein, it's a complete protein,” Hong said. “So it contains all the essential amino acids that our body needs to grow.”

The partnership also has resulted in the development of other healthy snacks, such as Frozen Fuel, an ice cream that includes tart cherry juice, as well as omega three fatty acids.
