Expanding Your Reach

As strength and conditioning director at A.C. Flora High School in Forest Acres, S.C., with more than 600 student-athletes from 38 teams, Micah Kurtz has his hands full. Instead of limiting his focus to strength and conditioning, however, Kurtz has developed a schoolwide culture of vitality and fitness.

An article from the Columbia Star  explains that along with building the school’s strength and conditioning program, Kurtz has also taken on a nutritionist role to help the student-athletes become as fit as possible. In addition, Kurtz’s program has expanded to the school’s staff, faculty, and parents with fitness competitions and boot camp workouts.

“The Falcon Family Boot Camp workouts are extremely well attended by parents, teachers, and community members,” Kurtz told the Columbia Star. “Once the parents see their children have bought into a healthy lifestyle, the parents want to be a part of it. We also send out regular emails to parents including workout tips and nutrition advice. We have worked with the cafeteria and food services staff to provide healthy food options to our students. Through our joint efforts, I have seen countless former students continue to focus on their fitness and healthy living well past their high school years.”

As a result of his commitment to excellence, Kurtz received the 2016 Strength of America National Award for raising strength and conditioning standards for athletes. Kurtz was also named the South Carolina Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2014.
